Barony of Stromgard

Baronial Council Meeting Summary

June 11, 2008

OFFICER REPORTS

Baron’s Report

Arnsbjorn Tiernanson CuRigh and Reginleif in hárfagra

Hail and well met!!

The Grand Thing was a most EPIC time. Sgt. Ivon, Bjorgvin, all the volunteers, and The Barony of Stromgard have truly set a great precedent with this event. We would like to thank everyone who volunteered. Without everyone’s help, these types of events would not be possible.

We heard many people say that it had been years since they had so much fun at an event, and that this type of event is what it is all about! Those are great words! We should all be proud of the jobs we did, and thankful that Sgt. Ivon and the Village of Bjorgvin are so willing to help us put this event on every year.  If you are at an event, and you get the chance, please stop by Bjorgvin and let them know how much we all appreciate them. They are good folks and very friendly. YAY GRAND THING!!!

Stormgods is just around the corner!! Let’s see if we can make it even cooler than Grand Thing. (GASP is it possible??)

As some of you know Reginlief and I will be doing some traveling this summer. We will be at Kjartan and Shaia's wedding, and will not be at the July business meeting. We will also be going to Denmark, and so we will be miss
ing July Coronation as well.

Lists Report

HL Ælfwynn Fiske

At Grand Thing I did the Lists for the Multi Weapons Tourney and the Foot Schlager races.

Sir Kjarten was the winner for the Multi Weapons Tourney and won a very nice Damascus-style knife (I think from Master Grendal).

The Foot Schlager was won by the house Morgan Van Pater.

My thanks to the heralds who were great at getting me the wins accurately and timely!  Lady Gemma made sure I kept watered and pickled!  The courtesy shown me by the fighters was greatly appreciated.

This is my 3rd year as Lists Mistress, so next summer will be the last of my terms.  Please start thinking of someone to do this job when I retire.

Herald’s Report,

HL Stanton MacLlyr, Red Trident

Grand Thing III

Here is the simple list of awards and recognition that took place at the Grand Thing III. Please contact me if something is missing or incorrect.

At opening court, Aedan MacEarnan was entered into Ordo Musarum, for his outstanding support of the Arts and Sciences.

Daphne Achaxe and Hanim Gulenay were called into court by her Excellency, and given the Baroness’ Favor, the Seamair, for their amazing support during the past year.

At Norse Court, held during the delicious potluck feast, much word fame was shared, and gifts were bestowed. The first to speak word fame was Her Royal Majesty Elizabeth, who called forth Gungreda the Good of 3 Mountains, and bestowed upon her Arms.
Sir Tiernan was awarded the Potisimus Hippocampus for his many years of service to Stromgard. The Village of Bjorgvin was entered into Ordo Famuli, and Meistara Kolfina received the Baroness Favor, the Seamair for her continued friendship and support.

At prize court, many people were honored for the prowess at the various games and contests, and instructors and organizers were thanked and praised.
Their Excellencies selected a new adult Archery Champion, as well.  Cyriac the Hunter, through his perseverance and skill with a bow, won the competition and was named Champion.

In the Children’s Champion, the first of several contests were held, and Corwin proved victorious, followed by Mara and Isolde. Among the older youths who would be named champion, Giovanni scored the highest in archery, followed by Anya.

These competitions, however, are only one step towards the Youth Championship.
ban Jarla Miranda was the overall victor in the Equestrian Games competition, and the Challenge course was won by Tassie.

HL Sabina MacLlyr was called into court, and entered into the Order of the Black Swan of Stromgard, for her continued service above and beyond the call of duty.

Sir Kjartan won both the multi weapons tournament, and the memorial axe tournament. Duke Steingrim won the domination tournament.

In the caber toss, HL Sterling and HL GaeRa won in their divisions, and Christopher won the youth category.

The family of Morgan von Prater proved victorious in the Footschlagger competition.

Axache was entered into the Order of the Bell and Chain, for her ongoing service to the Barony.

HL Sannan Cairngorne won the Baronial Charter Design Competition (the first scroll competition she has ever entered) with her entry for the Bell & Chain.

Grand Thing Equestrian Report, Contessa Illaria Veltri Degli Ansari

Thank you to all that came and watched us ride on Saturday and Sunday.  WE LOVE SPECTATIORS!!!!

I'll work on arranging a herald for Stormgods to announce the competitions and riders and to give a "blow by blow" commentary of just what it is we are doing out there anyway.  Also, a huge thank you to those that volunteered to help.  We can not put on an event without those who help set up, tear down and do ground crewing.  Not to mention all the kids who helped us out with brushing the horses!

We had 7 riders compete in two different tourneys on Saturday and Sunday.

Saturdays Tourney was a traditional games tourney comprising Saracen Heads, Rings, Birjas, Pig Sticking, Reeds and Spear Throw.

The line up was:
1 Miranda
2 Suzanne
3 Dryfa
4 Tassie
5 Allison

On Sunday we held a Challenge Course, testing both martial arts and equitation.

The line up was:
1. Tassie
2. Suzanne
3. Zacharia
4.
Dryfa
5.
Miranda
6.
Marilyn

Hurray to the competitors, it was a difficult weekend for the horses, one of the first times out this year, changeable weather and all that lightning and thunder!!

We authorized several new riders, acquired a number of wonderful new ground crew and had a pretty good time generally.

We did have one incident to report. One lady came off her horse hard enough to cause us to have her evaluated by the chirugeon. She was fine, just observation was needed for a time.

All appropriate paperwork has been filed for the equestrian end of things including the extra equestrian waivers mailed to the waiver secretary.

I will probably run similar tournaments with similar elements at Storm Gods later this summer.  Though I am going to work on the points system.  Any suggestions and input will be gratefully accepted.

Gold Key Report

Contessa Illaria Veltri Degli Ansari

Well we made it through the grand thing, sun and rain oh my.  Loaned out several outfits.  A big thank you to Dryfa for bringing me a load of hangers to put the clothing on.  It made it much easier to have everything hanging up for folks to choose from.

It worked well for me to have the gold key near the equestrian area.  Any complaints about that?

Heavy Marshal Report

Lord Cærdic Æthelwulf

Last week we had a large turnout we had a visit from Count Skegi and Duke John of Sky from West Kingdom, as well as approximately 20 other fighters. Practices continue at the same ole time, (7:00 until you've eaten enough rattan) at the same ole place (Harmony Elementary School) on the same ole day (every Thursday).

I am in desperate need of an Archery Marshal, a Children's Boffer Marshal, a Children's Archery Marshal, and a Rapier Marshal.

I see no reason why we can not have Children's Boffer and Rapier practice at the same time/place as Heavy Practice.

Archery Practice can be at my place or Washington Park in Portland.

I am holding an armoring workshop (pickle barrel type and some Leather) at my house on June 22. I have 3 or 4 individuals that wish to start fighting and I intend on helping them all get into gear.

I had to do some repairs to the loaner armor, but it is all in good repair now and ready to again be loaned out. I will be making some pauldrons from pickle barrel, as well as some sort of upper arm protection for those that wish to use it.

Water bearer Report

Lady Gemma Northwood

Water bearing for the Grand Thing went off without too many hitches. Thank you to all my helpers, volunteers, and everyone who put up with my moments of temporary insanity due to the heat on Saturday. Your support is appreciated!

I have a replacement lined up for water bearing once my term is up. Her name is Eileen. (Thank you, Eileen, for offering to step up!) I will be showing her the ropes at Stormgods. We've been communicating since the Thing ended, so that's a good sign.

I have already returned all the extra supplies to the barony for storage in the baronial trailer.

Chronicler Report

Lady Gemma Northwood

I am working on the June issue of The Siren. At present, I have a few recipes from the cooking guild to add to it. Contributions of articles, book reviews, artwork, photos, ect. are always welcome.

I have reports for April and May from most of the officers. I am also working on the notes summary for posting.

Unfortunately I've been a bit delayed due to technical difficulties with my home computer and the IPOD failing to save the May meeting recording. I have notes, however, and I'll do my best to get it put together.

Chatelaine Report

EarnanParthalan

This month of May I had one phone query and no emails or correspondences.

However, I had a least 2 extended conversations with newcomers and about 10 queries for Gold key at The Grand Thing.

I introduced about fifteen people to martial art of thrown weapons also at The Grand Thing, in which I helped the marshal.

We had a record number of newcomers at The Grand Thing.

I plan to attend as many demos and events as possible in June to further spread the word fame of Stromgard, and our fierce and noble peoples. All in all this has been a good month in Stromgard for introduction of newcomers to our fair game!

A & S Minister,

HL Helga in Loma

EVENT REPORTS

Report for Grand Thing III

HL Ivon Drengr

To the populace of Stromgard:

I am sorry that I cannot be here tonight, but I have been called away on business and I have asked Alina to present this to you all in my place.

The Grand Thing III was a success. The weather held and we almost broke the 500 mark for people through the gate. Even with the change of venue to Columbia County, we had 498 people. Maybe next year?

Stromgard’s word fame continues to grow with this event. Most of the comments I received from people were positive. Some had suggestions to make next year better, and should we do this again, I plan to get portable biffs for the camping area. Everyone loved the site. It is not as pretty as Skamania County, but we did not have any problems with wind. I think of it as moving from the fjords of Norway to inland Europe. Guess we are on a raid. Hot showers, electricity, flush toilets, and a mead hall that could hold 800 were big on the list of positives.

The fighting was great. We had 32 combatants for the Multi-weapons tourney, and the fighters enjoyed playing with new styles of fighting. Sir Kjarten won the field. Sir Tiernan then ran a Domination Tournament (3 unanswered blows) that was won by sir Steingrim. The following day the Monastery Raid was run. Loot was collected by many raiders and Kjarten was once again a victor in the memorial axe tourney.

Many contests were held: axe, archery, equestrian, spear, caber, bow, kubb, cooking, and bardic to name some. Many prizes were given thanks mainly to Sir Dublin, the merchants, the Baron and Baroness of Stromgard.

The Grand Thing was held Saturday night after the feast, lead by the Konungr of Bjorgvin Finnr Skeggason, the heads of the great houses and land of An Tir came before the assembled populace to discuss laws. Many great laws were put forth and voted on. In the end, it was decided that the 3rd law of the Grand Thing was the one brought forth by Daedin MacAoidh a’Mhonadh Clan Chief, “Let a great toast and cry ring out at the feast each year in honor of this fellowship and the hospitality of this hall.” Each year a new law is added. I would like to thank Stanton for the wonderful job he has done carving the laws into a Horn of Laws that we use at each Grand Thing.

[Financial section omitted-available upon request to barony members/SCA members]

I would like to have the barony send 10% of the profits to the Kingdom or Raven Travel Fund (whichever one needs it more). This will help Stromgard’s word fame and draw more people to next year’s event.

I would like to thank all those people who spent their time at the event helping to run it both from Stromgard and Bjorgvin. If we plan to do year four, I will be looking for you again to help me make this event successful.

I would now like to propose that we do it again next year, and I volunteer to autocrat the event. The Village of Bjorgvin has again pledged their help. What do you all say?

Sgt. Ivon

(Big yeses and applause at meeting, submitted proposed budget for 2009, available upon request)

Suggestions for improvement for Grand Thing IV:

·        Car passes

·        Sign for Gate location

·        Move people away from fence border due to harassment by passersby outside site

·        Biffies

155 non-members came to Grand Thing III.

Herald: I have lost and found. I have a set of unclaimed Honda car keys.

Stormgods

Raul Ladvenue submitted a proposal for a budget for Stormgods at Baronial Council. He volunteered to act as autocrat. Approved by Council.

No water on site. Can get water buffalo or people can bring in their own water. -Raul

Water buffalo not available in this area. Renting tank in pickup truck would be expensive. Advertise as dry site. Has non-potable water for horses. –Illaria

Need direction on site fees. Discussion followed.-Raul, Baroness

NEW SITE. Autocrat last year was Tiernan. Event site is a hay field. Do not want damage to plants.

Biffies found and reserved. Should have at least 1 handicapped biffy. Delivery of 12 biffies. Shouldn’t need pumping.

Stormgods will have Heavy Champion decided, Youth Combat, Archery, Rapier, ect.

Fiona, our A&S Champion, will help with Stormgods.

Autumn War

Baroness Reginleif reminded Contessa Illaria that a decision is needed on whether she will take on the role of serving as liaison between Stromgard and the Autocrat of Autumn War. Contessa Illaria indicated she would talk to Ed about it.

Yule Feast

Autocrat: Alina Folkstone

The event will be held at the hall at Columbia County Fairgrounds. The contract has been signed and 3M sent in for insurance. There are plans to arrange for live music and possibly bardic open mike time.

Alina asked for feedback from baronial council on activities that we would like to see at Yule Feast. The following ideas were generated:

·        Ornament exchange

·        Children’s Equestrian

·        Too many cooks in the kitchen ladies boffer tournament

·        A&S display

·        Cooking Contest

·        Game: Predator and prey??

·        Ghost stories

Founding Revel

It was noted that an autocrat is still needed and we need to find a new site as well. AElfwynn volunteered to serve as feastocrat.

NEW BUSINESS

Letter of intent for water bearing received from Eileen. Approved by Council. Will be trained to succeed Gemma as water bearer in charge for 2009 tourney season.

Letter from River’s Bend asking permission to use our lands for archery practices. It’s on someone else’s private property. Council agreed to absolutely allow this to continue and asked Baroness Reginleif to prepare and send a response to River’s Bend..
